font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">In 1961, Parker tried to capitalize on the success of their new convertible Parker 45\u00a0introduced the previous year.\u00a0 The resulting model was essentially a &#8220;51&#8221; in\u00a0most respects, with the exception\u00a0that instead of a built-in filler, it now had the capability of using either a converter or cartridge <em><strong>and<\/strong><\/em> for the first time\u00a0its famed finned collector was changed, as illustrated in the picture to the left.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/parker51.com\/images\/cartridge1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/parker51.com\/images\/cartridge1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\">The collector\u00a0was no longer finned and seemed not to serve any purpose other than holding the redesigned feed.\u00a0\u00a0 The nib remained the same as in the other &#8220;51&#8221; versions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\">The pen had a unique two-sided connector ring and a nipple coming from the feed, sometimes\u00a0confused by the inexperienced collector for\u00a0a broken aerometric filler.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/parker51.com\/images\/cartridge2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/parker51.com\/images\/cartridge2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\">The barrel\u00a0is also unique, in that it has no breather hole either at the end of the barrel or on the side\u00a0and is cut shallower and narrower inside and will not fit a regular full-sized aerometric pen.\u00a0 Although advertised as more convenient, the success of this pen was limited, and it was discontinued late in 1963.\u00a0 The reason for the limited success has been speculated to be that the cartridge gave the\u00a0&#8220;51&#8221; an image of being disposable, something that had not been part of the &#8220;51&#8221; positioning over the previous\u00a020+ years of production or maybe the redesigned collector affected performance more than expected.\u00a0Examples were advertised in\u00a0black, gray,\u00a0teal blue, burgundy\u00a0and navy blue.\u00a0 The repair manuals of the time do not list a forest green version, although I have seen a few around, including the one below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/parker51.com\/images\/cart-dia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/parker51.com\/images\/cart-dia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"877\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\">I have also found a few cartridge versions with 4 silver diamonds that go around\u00a0the barrel, as shown above.\u00a0 I am not sure what the purpose of these were, other than maybe to make it easier for salesmen to identify the cartridge pens in inventory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/parker51.com\/images\/0511-13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/parker51.com\/images\/0511-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\">There is also rumors of a Convertible\/Cartridge &#8220;51&#8221; demonstrator.\u00a0\u00a0I have not been able to locate or inspect a correct one yet.\u00a0\u00a0 The ones that I have seen so far have the regular aerometric demonstrator barrels, an easy pen to put together if you have the right parts.\u00a0 If anyone has a cartridge\/convertible demonstrator with no breather hole in the barrel, I would be very interested in inspecting\/photographing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!-- BOF buynow --><!-- EOF buynow --><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- EOF: .\/personal-templates\/simple\/generic\/paragraphs\/style.1 --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
